Healing foods to support physiotherapy recovery

You can do every exercise perfectly, but if your body lacks the building blocks to repair tissue, recovery slows down. Good nutrition isn't an extra, it's part of the treatment. Here's what actually helps during physiotherapy, kept simple and Indian-kitchen-friendly.

    1. Enough protein, every day

Protein rebuilds muscle, tendon, and bone. Aim for a palm-sized portion at each meal, dal, paneer, eggs, chicken, fish, curd, sprouts. Most people recovering from injury or surgery are eating too little.

    2. Anti-inflammatory foods

    • Turmeric (with a pinch of pepper) and ginger
    • Leafy greens, palak, methi, moringa
    • Berries and seasonal fruits
    • Omega-3 sources: walnuts, flaxseed, fatty fish
    • Olive or mustard oil for cooking

    3. Don't skip carbohydrates

Cutting carbs slows healing. Choose mostly whole grains, jowar, bajra, brown rice, oats, to fuel exercises and recovery.

    4. Hydration matters more than you think

Joints, discs, and muscle tissue all rely on adequate water. Aim for 2 to 3 litres a day, more in Pune's hotter months or if you're sweating in sessions.

    5. Key micronutrients for healing

    • Vitamin D, sunlight + foods like eggs and fortified milk
    • Vitamin C, amla, citrus, capsicum (essential for collagen)
    • Calcium and magnesium, dairy, sesame, leafy greens
    • Zinc, pulses, nuts, seeds

    What to cut back on

Heavily processed foods, excess sugar, deep-fried snacks, and alcohol all increase inflammation and slow tissue repair. You don't need to be perfect, just consistent.

Our physiotherapists at YesPhysio9 routinely guide patients on simple recovery nutrition alongside their treatment, especially after surgery or long-standing injuries.
